2012 Ski Season - A Disaster

Ski areas are hurting and so are any businesses associated with them. The lack of snow and the perception that the skiing is non existent is exacting a heavy toll. Okemo management says business is down 20% this season. Killington's trail count is at just over half its full capacity. Hospitals are treating more people for injuries suffered from falling on ice than from skiing accidents. Mad River Glen which relies on natural snow, had a long delayed opening this season and is obviously exasperated.

"We’re still waxing poetic up here on the hill!
The groomers were sweet and gave us all quite a thrill!
The skiing right now is as much fun as you make it,
But it’s sunny and warm, and gosh darn it, we’ll take it!
The forecast calling for SNOW on the way,
But first it’ll be sunny and in the 30s on Friday.
So tune up your skis and grab your sunglasses,
And maybe sign up for one of those Freeheel Friday classes.
Then head to the pub for a fresh pint of brew
And hopefully we’ll see you this weekend too!"

Ironcally, the skiing on the slopes that are open isn't that bad, although it is not natural snow. Modern grooming techniques and snowmaking produce a 2-3" surface of finely chopped ice crystals. This sits on a hard icy base called boilerplate because of its resilience and resistance to changing weather conditions. All, this is fine as long as there isn't too much skier traffic. And, that's the whole point...there isn't that much skier traffic!
